Jon Land is a writing pro and a thoughtful mentor. It was my pleasure to talk with him about his new paperback release, STRONG ENOUGH TO DIE, and his long career as a popular author. I am pleased to have been invited back to the SCWC this weekend to share my knowledge of writing craft, character development, and maybe even a little business 101. If you are in San Diego, stop by and say hello.I'm an editor!

Good news on the Nathan McBride front. I've completed the rough draft of the next book, tentatively titled FORCED TO KILL. It's in the hands of my very capable freelance editor Ed Stackler. With a little luck and a lot of work, it should hit the bookstores by fall of this year.To all who've written me asking about the next book, let me apologize for the delay. I had to take a year off from writing to care for my wife's sister, Marie. She was suffering from terminal ovarian cancer. During her last eight months, Marie lived with us in our home—a difficult situation, and I found it nearly impossible to write. Lots of heartache and tears. Marie lost her battle in October. Our prayers and blessings accompany her to heaven. She was a remarkable woman and we miss her dearly.
Over the last three months, I've worked hard to get back on track. FORCED TO KILL is powerful story. Here's a snapshot:
When a mutilated body is discovered in a remote Utah lake, it ignites a chain of events that forces Nathan McBride to face a dark chapter from his past that he's worked hard to forget. Bravery. Honor. Sacrifice. These are more than mere words to the ex-Marine sniper. He's never backed away from danger and he's not about to start now, even if it means confronting the cold-blooded interrogator who tortured him to the brink of death following a botched mission more than a decade ago. Could the killer really be working again now? On American soil? The evidence is clear, but the stakes are higher than Nathan can know. Some secrets are best left buried, especially when powerful people are involved. In a showdown that will test Nathan's understanding of justice and mercy, he'll have to make a life or death decision that has the potential to expose and destroy people at the highest levels of his country's government.
Hang in there with me, it will be worth your while. More classic Nathan McBride action!Bourchercon here I come!
I've been invited to Bouchercon 2009 to participate in a both a panel and book signing, so I'll be heading to Indianapolis October 15-18.Come visit me. Open discussion panel: Thursday, October 15, 12:45-1:30 p.m. Book Bazaar signing: Sunday, October 18, 9-11 a.m.
Audiobook reviews
First to Kill audiobook reviews have been very positive. Here are a few:
- "If you love thrillers with military and FBI agents, guns shooting, things blowing up and a well thought out plot this is a book I can recommend to you."
Publishers Weekly blog. Thank you Ms. Faye
- "Peterson could stand up to a big shot like Ludlum any day. His book got down to the action right away and I don't think there was a single point in the book that ran on too long or that bored me."
AudioBook-For-Good.com
- "Andrew Peterson's debut novel First To Kill was everything a good audio book should be. It was equal parts great story and well read."

First To Kill is on Audible.com!
I'm thrilled to announce that award winning narrator Dick Hill is the voice behind FIRST TO KILL! Dick has read all of Lee Child's Jack Reacher books and many of Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch stories. I've dreamed of hearing Dick read my audiobook from the very beginning and I actually wrote FIRST TO KILL with Dick Hill's narration in mind! He infuses deep emotion, action, and suspense to the story with style and class. Dick Hill did a truly masterful job. You can download FIRST TO KILL at: Audible.com, you can also find it through Amazon.com. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!
ThrillerFest 2009
ThrillerFest 2009 in New York City, July 8th-11th is right around the corner! ThrillerFest has become the country's leading thriller conference with an all star lineup of New York Times bestselling authors. If you've never attended a writers conference before, come join the fun!
On Friday July 10th at 4:00 PM, I'll be chairing another panel for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) this year. Look for an explosives dog demo, a large assortment of firearms to handle and examine, and ATF agents to answer all your questions about the organization and what it does to keep America safe from threats, both domestic and foreign. I volunteered to be the guinea pig for (Thomas A. Swift's Electric Rifle) TASER demo, but those darn legal issues got on the way! I hope to see you there!
Then in October, I'll also be attending Bouchercon 2009, the World Mystery Convention. As always, tons of great mystery writers dedicated to honing their stories. More on Bouchercon as the date nears.
Audio Book to be Read by Dick Hill!
Exciting news! The audio book rights for First to Kill have been secured by Audible.com, and I'm happy to announce that Golden Voice Dick Hill has been tapped to do the reading. You may know Dick's work with other authors, such as Lee Child, Stephen White, S.E. Hinton, and countless others. I'm truly honored to have him aboard.

Road Weary but Well Rewarded
I'm pleased to announce the Costco purchase worked out well. It sold nearly 9,000 books in just under two months achieving a 92% sell through. I worked hard to reach those numbers. In September and October, I visited 91 of out of the 97 Costco buildings carrying FIRST TO KILL. I drove 5,500 miles through 5 states, California, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada. Both before and after the Costco locations closed for business, I hit many Barnes & Noble and Borders bookstores. All told, I visited 247 locations carrying FIRST TO KILL. I hope the seeds I planted will produce some results!
My first formal book signing at Warwick's in La Jolla on November 9th was a big success too. We had strong numbers. I want to thank my family and friends for their efforts to make it a great event.
My next appearance will be at the Southern California Writers Conference being held at the Crowne Plaza in Mission Valley, February 13th-16th. I'm working hard on the next Nathan McBride adventure. In it, Nathan will come face-to-face with his former interrogator from Nicaragua - powerful drama and action at its best!
Zoo to You
I just wanted to take a moment and point you to a group that Carla and I are active with, Zoo To You, a great program that brings wildlife education to kids. They're a great group of people, and I'm happy to say that they'll be doing a book singning with me in the near future.
Dorchester Special Feature
I'm honored to say that my publisher, Dorchester, has put out a piece that I did on the writer's journey, and my own experience with First to Kill. You can read it at Dorchester's site.

Thriller Fest
The International Thriller Writers 3rd annual conference, ThrillerFest 2008 in New York City, will remain one of the most memorable experiences of my life. To say it was amazing, would be an understatement. I've never met a more successful and friendly group of bestselling authors. I'll try to name some of the authors I had the privilege of meeting: Sandra Brown, Lee Child, David Dun, Michael Palmer, Gayle Lynds, Barry Eisler, Heather Graham, Jon Land, Steve Martini, Katherine Neville, Steve Berry, James Rollins, Bob Mayer, David Morrell, Kathleen Antrim, Andrew Gross, R.L. Stine, M.J. Rose, and too many others to list here.
Each of them was approachable, charming, and generous with their time. They're also very supportive of the International Thriller Writers (ITW) Debut Authors program of which I'm honored to be a member.
Because I was so overwhelmed with everything going on, I completely forgot to take pictures, so all I've got are memories, but fond memories they are!
On Friday, July 11th, I hosted a panel discussion with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. It was a presentation of the various weapons and tactics the ATF uses in its day to day operations. One of the ATF's armored vehicles was brought up from Washington DC for all the conferees to examine. There was also an explosives dog demonstration where some gun parts were planted in the audience on one of my fellow Debut Authors, Rip Gerber and the dog busted him within two minutes. The ATF was willing to demonstrate how handcuffs are used, but I convinced them poor Rip was setup and really wasn't trafficking illegal gun parts. The ATF panel was so successful, I've been asked to bring the ATF back for next year's ThrillerFest.
On Saturday night, the awards banquet was well represented. I did a rough estimate of the sheer number of books in print from the attending authors. Conservatively, I came up with just under 2 billion, Yes, that's billion with a "B".
I'm really looking forward to next year, and contributing to the incredible number of books in print from such a great group of people. Until then...
Publishers Weekly
Check out the review for First to Kill at Publishers Weekly.
Debut author Peterson kicks off a series in fine style with this complex and action-packed conspiracy thriller. Former CIA sniper Nathan McBride, called in to investigate the disappearance of an undercover FBI agent who happens to be the grandson of former FBI director Frank Ortega, tracks down two homegrown arms dealers/terrorists, Leonard and Ernie Bridgestone, who have a huge supply of Semtex explosive. When McBride kills one of their men, the Bridgestones retaliate by blowing up an FBI headquarters building in California. As McBride chases them down, he discovers that what he thought was a clean-cut case of “catch the terrorist” is anything but, with corruption and twists that connect to Ortega and may involve McBride's own estranged senator father. Competent, intelligent, cool under pressure and romantically involved with FBI agent Holly Simpson, McBride is an extremely promising hero, and his adventures will be a big hit with thriller fans. Report from BEA
BEA Los Angeles was a magical time. I felt like a kid in a candy store. Free books. Author autographs. Starbucks coffee. It doesn't get much better than that. I signed over 200 ARCs in Dorchester's booth on Friday with Stacy Dittrich being my co-signing buddy.
I talked with Lee Child at the Mystery Writers of America booth and received autographed books from James Rollins, Stephen Cannell, Heather Graham, William Shatner, and too many others to mention.
The Dorchester Publishing folks were great and I'd like to offer my heart-felt thanks to Tim DeYoung and Erin Galloway, Skip Marines, and Brooke Borneman. You guys are the best!
Next on my agenda: The Santa Barbara Writers Conference June 21 - 26 where I'll be attending Laura Taylor's classes.
Interview at BookHuntersBlog.com
I was recently invited to talk shop with the great folks over at BookHuntersBlog.com. Their site is an excellent

Researching the Thriller: When Ten Percent is Enough.
I wrote an essay on some of the considerations that should be made when researching a novel in this genre, and it's been featured at the International Thriller Writers site.
First off, I want to express a heartfelt thanks to everyone who has taken the time to contact me and wish me luck with the new book, I sincerely appreciate your support!
So I have a couple of news items I wanted to mention briefly. First, Dorchester Publishing has invited me to join them at next month's BookExpo America (BEA) at the Los Angeles Convention Center and sign advance reading copies of First to Kill. This year the BEA runs from May 29 to June 1, and I'll be signing copies at their booth from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 30th.
Also, if you're an avid or even casual reader of thrillers, you're probably familiar with the annual Thrillerfest conference. It's pretty much the highlight of the year for fans and authors of thriller novels. This year's conference is being held in New York City from July 9 - 12, and I'm very excited to announce that I've been invited to moderate a panel discussion in which the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco, and Explosives (ATF) will make a weapons and tactics presentation. We're currently booked in the 3:00 p.m. timeslot on Friday, July 11th, and check their website for more information in the coming weeks.
Thank you for visiting my new site. I hope you'll check back often as we add new features and announcements. For now, I hope you'll save the date, as I've been confirmed to speak at this year's Southern California Writers' Conference Los Angeles on September 26 - 28.
